Literacy Workshop
September 29, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
As you know, DPP is a proponent of continuing education that helps our members gain additional skills, making them more confident while working in their volunteer experiences.
If you are new to volunteerism in literacy programs (libraries, schools, & other locations) or have experience and want to learn more and share your knowledge with others, please consider the following training opportunity.
DPP is preparing for a 4-5 hour literacy seminar on Saturday, September 29th to be held at Parker Adventist Hospital. DPP intends to provide each attendee a Pet Partner, “Read with Me”, manual and lunch will be served. The entire day, materials, and lunch will be free of charge to DPP members.
Our instructors on this day will be Linda Forsyth and Ann Rossenwasser. You know them already as DPP members, PP Handler Workshop Instructors, PP Evaluators, and highly experienced volunteers with a history of working with children (in addition to other activities).
The goal of this training is to equip handlers with ideas and tools that enable them to make reading a more enjoyable experience for children. You will learn to work with your animal partner to change the focus of the interaction so that the child becomes the teacher rather than the student during reading time. This makes the entire reading experience more fun and far less threatening for kids who have difficulty reading or for those who need to gain confidence in their abilities.
Additionally, the seminar will include plenty of open forum time in which we plan that experienced handlers will share their tips and tricks that enhance visits and make them successful and fun!
Please contact Susan Horecki for more information.
